Shadow Play: Special All-Levels Class with Solar Eclipse Viewing

SPECIAL CLASS

with Rainey

The moon and sun are in a constant dance with the earth and on this day they will line up in such a way to bring a partial eclipse to Seattle. For a few minutes at 10:20am the moon will obscure the majority of the sun; an event that occurs only every 30+ years. You are invited to join us for a community viewing and All-Levels yoga practice in the shadow of the sun.

Ocean & Shore: Molokai 2018

A YOGA & MEDITATION RETREAT

with Denise Benitez and Karen Sprute-Francovich

Yoga, meditation, nourishing meals, private grounds, stunning sunsets, community, exploring, and so much more — all while enjoying the profound beauty and deep relaxation that only Mother Molokai can offer.

Our current culture is filled with yang (active, masculine, striving) and does not tend to value round, moist, deep reserves and sustenance such as those that are found in Hawaii, and especially on Mother Molokai. Spend a week practicing and adoring the things that are often neglected in our culture. Instead of sharp, bright, fast, surface, we will bring to life those energies that are soft and low, slow and deep; the energies that heal and promote what yogis call soma, ease of being. This week will be an antidote to all the noise and speed of the over-culture and a time to rest deeply and replenish your inner stores of wellness and optimism.

How to Design & Teach an Intro to Yoga Series

WORKSHOP

with Beth Award

An intro series is a great way to break down the basics of yoga and help cultivate a person’s confidence to attend public classes or to simply create a home practice. As teachers, we have the opportunity to impart the basics of yoga in a careful, sequential way so that a person’s ongoing yoga practice—of any style—is informed and enhanced.

So how would one break down the basics of this vast body of practice in 6 weeks and inspire and inform someone who may have never stepped foot inside a yoga studio?? This interactive workshop aims to spark your creativity for teaching an intro series.

The Strong Yogi: Balancing Strength & Flexibility

WORKSHOP

with Amanda Ford & Denise Benitez

It’s an exciting time to be practicing and teaching yoga. For decades flexibility, “lengthening” your muscles and training your joints to move into extreme ranges of motion, were typically the focus of yoga asana. This is quickly changing as the studies of exercise science and biomechanics are more readily applied to yoga, moving us toward a more integrated view of asana that recognizes the importance of muscular strength as well as flexibility. Join us for a lively workshop filled with discussion and practice.

This workshop is open to anyone, and is part of our 300-hour Advanced Teacher Training program.

Shoulder Mobility & Stability: A Restorative Exercise Workshop

WORKSHOP

with Shannon Rude

Our shoulders are arguably the most complex joints in our bodies. However, because of all of the modern conveniences we have available to us, we rarely take full advantage of our potential shoulder movement. For the vast majority of our day, we use only a tiny portion of our shoulders’ possible range of motion, which can leave them stiff and in pain. Lack of varied movement at the shoulder joints can also lead to more severe issues such as tendonitis, bursitis, and frozen shoulder.

Creative Sequencing Strategies for Yoga Teachers

Creative Sequencing Strategies for Yoga Teachers

WORKSHOP

with Greta Hill

Sequencing is one of the skills that can really distinguish “just another yoga class” from a totally transformational yoga experience! Sequencing is the arrangement of asana within a yoga class that holds the understanding of the body’s intelligence, as well as key movement patterns and a strategy for making intelligent progression over time.

Vinyasa Krama is the art of placing things in a “special way with purpose.” This workshop will deepen your understanding of Vinyasa Krama while providing teachers and serious practitioners of yoga a clear map towards intelligent, progressive and creative sequencing.

This workshop is open to anyone, and is part of our 300-hour Advanced Teacher Training program.

Did you know that there are 100,000-200,000 nerves in the sole of each of your feet? And that your feet have the potential to be just as dextrous and functional as your hands? The soles of the feet are some of the most sensitive and receptive parts of the human body, and when we walk barefoot they receive a huge amount of constant input that helps improve balance, strength, and stability throughout the body.

From Transcendence to Therapy: A Natural History of the Body in Yoga

WORKSHOP

with Special Guest Matthew Remski

Any natural history of yoga has to be grounded with conceptions of the body and it’s purpose through time. We’ll look at Indian sources for the cosmic body, the body of sacrifice, the body as temple, the meanings of dismemberment and mortification in mythology, and then the “hydraulic awakening laboratory” of the medieval Tantric body. We’ll look at the confusing way in which “hatha” has been translated—as “violent exertion”. Is that accurate?
